Venezuala to Chavez: `Why Don't You Just Shut Up?'

Venezuela's Hugo Chavez apparently has irritated more people than just Spanish King Juan Carlos. He had a setback this weekend when he attempted to make himself Presidente' for life, apply marxism to the economy and hijack what remains of his country's liberty.

In a referendum, the Venezuelan people defeated constitutional changes designed to place Chavez in charge of virtually every area of life and keep him in power.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that Chavez can accomplish most of this by decree, thanks to the Chavez-controlled national assembly passing the Enabling Law back in February, which gives the president the authority to issue decrees in economic and other matters that can last up to 18 months, and then be renewed.

So Chavez is still in a position to place the Venezuelan economy in a marxist mode and control most of the country's political life to consolidate his hold on power - it will just take longer and have to be done a little at a time.
