Watcher's Council Nominations, 5/21/08

Every week, the Watcher's Council members nominate two posts each, one from the Council members and one from outside for consideration by the whole Council. The complete list of this week's Council nominations can be found at the site of our fearless leader, the infamous Watcher of Weasels

Do take the time to check out the non-Council links as well - they're always worthwhile.

Council News: Rick Moran of RightWing Nuthouse was here when I came on, and I've always enjoyed his writing. He has decided to leave our little group and move on, and we all wish him well.

However, that means...you guessed it, another vacancy at the Watcher's Council. If you think you measure up, contact the Watcher here and apply.

So here's this week's lineup...enjoy!

Would You Buy An ObamaMobile From Tom Friedman? Joshuapundit- As Barack Hussein Obama's support among Jews hemorrhages, The Chosen One has gone all out to try and stem the flow, resorting to well trained shills in the media to try and reassure the Jews that it's perfectly okie-dokie to swallow the Kool-ade and support Obama, even if Hamas, Hezbollah, Jimmy Carter, Al Sharpton and Louis Farakhan do the same.

The New York Times' designated dhimmi Tom Friedman does his bit for the Cause, putting forth the proposition that being pro-Israel means buying Obama. Unfortunately, while trying to peddle this lemon,he inadvertently raises some questions that reveals quite a bit about the shortcomings of this particular model..and about himself.

Is Human Moral Progress Inevitable? The Colossus of Rhodey - Hube has an interesting take this week, as he ponders whether technological progress equals moral progress. As far as I'm concerned, Ecclesiastes had the last word on the matter when he proclaimed that there is nothing new under the sun...by which I interpret he meant that basic human nature doesn't change.

Net Loss Done With Mirrors - Callimachus looks at some disturbing trends on the internet - one in the courts and one involving an ISP's attempt to 'track' it's customers with 'more relevant pop up ads' based on the sites they visit. If I were a Charter Communications customer, I'd be closing my account.

Renaming the Paradigm *UPDATED* Bookworm Room - Ms. Bookworm recounts an interesting conversation with her mother on the political 'home ' of tyranny and comes to the conclusion that it's not a question of Right or Left, but of statists versus individualists.

No One Will Solve Our Energy Problems For Us Hillbilly White Trash - Lemuel makes a point similar to one I made on these pages a few months ago - that the solution to our energy problems rests in our own hands. I agree with him.

And this, courtesy of an Israeli scientist may also be of considerable help.

George Bush Isolationist Soccer Dad- This week Soccer Dad contrasts the pre 9/11 George W. Bush as a presidential candidate with his actions in office and wonders if assuming the presidency tends to tilt the party in power towards more aggressive action:

There are two major ways that politicians can show that they are doing something: by spending or by making war. So the party in power is more likely to be hawkish and the party out of power is likely to be more cautious in the use of force. (If our next president is Barack Obama, I wouldn't be surprised if he found a conflict at some point during his term that, according to his principles, necessitated military action.)

An interesting line of thought!

Time To Remember The "Global" In The War On Terror Cheat Seeking Missiles -Laer writes about the necessity of confronting the jihadis on various fronts (he mentions Lebanon and Darfur) and enjoins us to remember that the war we're engaged in is global, and not to become too bogged done in merely concentrating on Iraq and Afghanistan. I agree with him, with two important caveats: first, that in order to kill a snake you need to cut off its head, and second, that no insurgency has ever survived in modern times without a safe haven to train, recruit, finance and rearm. And I would respectfully direct him to take a look at this for a further clue as to why we're still fighting these brigands six years later.

Seattle Times Writer Defends Hitler's Aggression! -Rhymes With Right - Greg nicely excoriates an Obama-ite who tried to attack Bush's Knesset speech on appeasement by writing that Hitler's demands in Europe were 'reasonable'.

It's quite gratifying to me that the Seattle Times' readers by a vast majority took this cretin to task in no uncertain terms - to the point where the poor leftard actually tried to sneak in a rewrite of this drivel without telling anyone and republished it, hoping it would slip by.

It didn't. He was busted throughout the `sphere and made to look even more asinine then he did before.

Republicans Ponder The Abyss Wolf Howling - GW examines the current state of the Republican party, and envisions how they might change things for the better.

Death Toll Continues to Mount The Glittering Eye - Dave Schuler looks at the recent tragedy of the China earthquake and draws some interesting conclusions about its meaning for Chinese society as a whole..namely that they are going to have to create domestic markets and by extension, I think, a freer society.

Hillary's Fuzzy Math The Education Wonks - EdWonk looks at the seeming demise of the Clinton presidential campaign and offers his thoughts on where things went sour.
